B.I.G. Summer 2018 hosts Poster & Award Session

This summer, the Institute for Quantitative and Computational Biology (QCB) hosted the Fourth Annual Bruins-In-Genomics (B.I.G.) Summer Research Program. On August 17, 2018, the UCLA community gathered at Hershey Hall’s Grand Salon to view the results of our 41 students’ research projects, which culminated in 27 spectacular scientific posters.

Despite the stiff competition, poster judges selected the following Best Poster winners based on Science, Visual Presentation, and Oral Presentation:

  • Ram Ayyala, Jacqueline Castellanos, and Emily Wesel: Analyzing the Adaptive Immune Repertoire Diversity and Microbiomes of African Individuals using RNA Sequence Data
  • Dana Franklin and Nnamdi Osakwe: Pandora: A Pan-Genome Database of the Human Oral Microbiome
  • Mohammadreza Hajy Heydary and Anna Yaschenko: Comparison of Method of Moments and Restricted Maximum Likelihood Estimators for Approximating SNP-Heritability and Genetic Correlation
  • Elaine Huang and Michele Ramos Correa: Assessing the Global Landscape of Extracellular MicroRNA Expression
  • Emily Kobayashi and Jacquelyn Roger: Investigating the Impact of Overlapping Read Mates on Variant Calling
  • Varuni Sarwal: Comprehensive Benchmarking of Structural Variant Callers
