Workshop Description (Intermediate Course)
This workshop will cover the basis of Next-Gen Sequencing Library Preparation for Illumina Sequencers. Different Library Preparation Techniques (DNA-seq, ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, Methyl-seq) are explained the first and second day in class. The third day, Quality Control steps of the starting input material and final libraries are performed in the Lab (TapeStation). Purification from Primer Dimers (using AMPure beads) and Library Submission is also performed on the same day. The third day is optional, sign-up is required.
Workshop Topics
Day 1 - Library Prep 101, focus on DNA
- Theory behind Next Generation Sequencing Library Preparation
- DNA Library Preps (WGS and WES)
- Other Library Preps:

Technical Requirements
Day 3 will take place in a wet lab. Attendees will need the following prior to the start of class:
- Complete the online Lab Safety Fundamentals Training, found here: http://training.ehs.ucla.edu.
- Bring personal protective equipment.
Instructor
Dr. Giorgia Del Vecchio is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Sherin U. Devaskar laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics, Devid Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Before joining UCLA, she earned a PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology from Sapienza University of Rome, working on the microRNA-target interaction mechanism and demonstrating how miR-200a together with the binding protein HuR could have a stabilizing effect on their target c-Jun. Her current research focus on circulating cell-free nucleic acids isolated from maternal samples (plasma and urine), trying to understand their function and diagnostic potential early in pregnancy.

Reviews
It was a super clear lecture. I learned a lot and also was very entertained the whole time. Marco answered questions great and obviously prepared very well for this. Thanks to The Collaboratory for making this happen.
Great workshop! The hands-on portion in the wet lab really increased the intellectual value and added to the experience.
Clear and informative!
